Some parents never hear their baby cry. Others never have the chance to hold their child in their arms. And others are forced to say goodbye long before they are ready.
Today, 15 October, on Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, at Life Network Foundation we remember these little lives and the families who carry their loss.
In Malta, where family is so deeply cherished and the arrival of a new baby is celebrated with such joy, we must also learn to make room for those whose anticipation has turned into grief. Not every pregnancy ends with a baby in its mother’s arms. And not every parent has photographs, birthdays, or memories to share.
Sometimes, in our attempts to offer comfort, we say things like, “you can always try again,” or “at least it happened early.” Yet love is not measured in weeks of pregnancy, nor is grief diminished by the brevity of a life.
As a society, we must learn to listen more, to assume less, and to recognise that these parents do not need our silence or our explanations. They need our presence, our understanding, and our compassion. We must ask ourselves whether, here in Malta, we have created enough space for these families to grieve openly, to speak about their children without discomfort, and to receive the support they deserve.
Today, at 7 p.m., families across the world will light candles as part of the International Wave of Light. As the light passes from one time zone to another, a beautiful chain of remembrance will encircle the globe. Perhaps each small flame can remind us of something our society must never forget; that even the briefest life can leave an immeasurable mark on the human heart.
